Bad nuus: The person with the stroke has reported an increase in the pressure inside his head. Thankfully, there's no moar bleeding, but this combined with his previous health problems does not bode well. They might have to do surgery on him again...here's hoping things work out. ~_~ |

Me: Ummm, I should probably mention that that is a photo of someone who is no longer, ummm, alive. Psychic (nodding): He died very suddenly. Me: Yes, he was murdered. Psychic: He knew the man who killed him. Me: Yes, he did. Psychic: So, what's your question? Me: Well, I just kind of wanted to know if, uhhhh, in his very last moment before he, ya know...expired...if he...ummmm...found peace, or whatever.
There was an excruciatingly long pause.
Psychic (slowly and deliberately): He died very suddenly.
OUCH.
Well, at least he didn't lie about it. |

Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire - Like The Blind Side, this was another Movie About A Fat Black Kid Overcoming Odds. Only this one wasn't a pile of recycled feelgood horse shit. (3 out of 4)
Avatar - Well, at least it was pretty. (2 out of 4) |

You Don't Mess with the Zohan - Adam Sandler speaking Hebrew is maybe a little funny. (1.75 out of 4) אדם סנדלר דוברי עברית היא אולי קצת מצחיק
Where The Wild Things Are - They roared their terrible roars and they gnashed their terrible teeth and it was all just really, really boring. (1.25 out of 4)
Me and You and Everyone We Know - This came out in 2005 and I think IFC's been playing it nonstop since then. (3 out of 4)
Up In The Air - I will not use that "flight connection / connection to other people" pun here. (3.25 out of 4) |

[Dec. 23rd, 2009|08:15 pm] |
The mail is here. It never fails.
The mail brought me a_small_star's X-Mas card (hay girl, haaayy, delicious card looks DELICIOUS, keeps reminding me of how much I want a PEPPERMINT MOCHA FRAPP right now, omg) and dentist appointment card. Yayayayayayay!
I am still sick. So I have a fuckload of Internets I will have to catch up on when I finally decide to. It feels like someone has stuffed a fuzzy sock half-way down my throat and disabled my neck muscles and just WALKED AWAY. More Vicks and NyQuil tonight and some Mucinex in the morning. Big Guns YESSS.
My poor, poor $200 keyboard, the diNovo Edge has suffered a strange boo-boo and is now telling me its battery is critical just 12 hours after charging (it used to start dying after a month or more). Luckily I still have my receipt from two years ago and the Logitech auto-answer thingy is telling me I'm within warranty and if I send it out, they'll send me a new one back. FUCKIN' YEAH. I know tomorrow and this weekend are NOT the days to do it, but I have to sometime within the next ten days. Crossing my fingers that this will work.
I felt like so much shit going into work today. A little high from (I guess) vitamin and cold med overlap and not exactly clear on where I was until about an hour before I had to leave. Tomorrow is a much more shit shift, 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., again. The parking lot was, well, a parking lot today. What I mean by that is that each lane in the parking lot, as I left, was completely unmoving. People were PACKED into the store today. What we have left for them to buy, I have no idea. Some boxes? A few groceries. Shirts and tampons. Scraps, mostly.
But if they want the ad done, they can't have me on register or anything tomorrow. Leave it to Tgt to plan the biggest ad possible right after X-Mas when we have the least amount of time to prep. Last week they were lulled into a false sense of security with a 2,400 sign ad. This week? 5,400. Batshit. I won't get everything done on the prep. Well, everything won't be perfect, that is. I'll get enough done.
UGH I WANT ALL THIS SNOT TO GO AWAY. brb dying.
Um. There was more I wanted to say, of course, but the drugs are about to wear off again which means I get to take the NYQUIL so excited. Time for bed, then. Time to stop feeling like shit for a few hours. |

Upd8!!!! They did surgery on him last night. Took them 5 hours...
But it was a success! :D :D :D :D :D
His condition has stabilized, according to my mom. He *should* be okay. The issus: He's drooling a bit and his left side is paralyzed, but my mom says that's normal right after a stroke, and he *should* recover. About the paralysis: See, the problem is that there are apparently a bunch of blood clots in his brain. The amount of mobility he'll recover is contingent on the number of those they can remove. My mom says they should be able to remove most if not all, tho...they sent him to a very good neurology center that has tons of the most advanced equipment, and they have a little thingamajig there that can remove clots with a minimum of trouble. Now, things *could* still go wrong at this point, we can't tell for sure, but overall, things are looking much better.
tl;dr: We're not out of the woods yet, but we're getting there :D Thanks for all your prayers and support, my friends! It helped a lot, it did :D Keep it comin, though, at this point we still need all the luck we can get... |

| Trying to remember every movie I've seen since May |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|03:50 pm] |
Up - Like Pixar could make a bad movie. (3.5 out of 4)
Funny People - Way to ruin Adam Sandler's Oscar bid with that shitty third act, Mr. Apatow. (2.75 out of 4)
The Blind Side - Exactly what you'd expect. (1 out of 4)
Inglourious Basterds - Exactly what you'd expect from Tarintino writing about the second World War. (2.5 out of 4)
Son of Rambow - I guess you just had to be in the UK in the 80s to really appreciate this. (2.25 out of 4) [IMDB]
Choke - You'd think I'd like a film about a sex addict. (1.75 out of 4)
The Hangover - Dude, where's my Galifianakis? (2.5 out of 4)
Visioneers - Brazil + Schizopolis + Galifianakis - funny = (2.25 out of 4) [IMDB]
An Education - Pedophilia! It's hip! It's cool! (2 out of 4) [IMDB]
Lars and the Real Girl - So, wait. He never even had sex with the thing? Those dolls cost around $6,000 and he never banged it? What the cock is that about? (2.5 out of 4) No, I'm just kidding. Everyone knows us introverts are asexual.
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs - More like "cloudy with a chance of FUN!" Am I right guys? Back to you, Gus. (3.25 out of 4)
The Fantastic Mr. Fox - The Wes Anderson MovieTM, now formulated for children! (3.5 out of 4) You wrote a bad song, Petey.
Bruno - I gave Borat a 3.5, so I guess this one gets a 3.5 too. Because they are the same movie. Only this one has more penis. (Borat out of 4)
The Bicycle Thief - I only know about this movie because they made such a big deal about it in The Player. (3.75 out of 4) |

| | cj boyd - pensive pez | ] | I just did my final trumpet jury. It was pretty bad. I was going along decently for a couple of pages and then it started to fall apart. Somewhere along the line, they took juries off the the list of requirements for music ed majors. Nobody sent me the memo, so I signed up. When I found out I didn't have to it, I was annoyed but decided to stick it out. I wanted to prove that I could gain some control over my nerves and finally have a good jury. I have never had a good jury or audition, though I passed them all. I guess you could argue that they are good since I passed, but whatever. I have tremendous performance anxiety and I get all crazy and out of sorts and annoyed with everyone for a few days, then comes the performance, which usually sucks hard.
I tried something new this morning right before going to my jury. I did yoga for forty-five minutes, and I kept telling myself the entire time, "no matter the outcome of this performance, I am happy with myself and still a good trumpet player." And I am happy with the work I did this semester. I kinda came back from the dead as far as the trumpet is concerned. Even though the performance eventually fell apart, it was still better than ever as far as my nerves were concerned.
I wish I had more of an opportunity to tame my anxiety. Trumpet juries only came around twice per year. And every one was a nerve-wracking as the first. I don't get like that with the guitar. Singing and playing guitar used to be really bad in the beginning, but exposing myself to the stage night after night, cured my guitar anxiety. Well, the stage at the bar is different than the recital hall anyway.
So to deal with these unpleasant feelings I'm having right now, I'm looking to the future. I contacted a guy who wants to start a punk-ska-jazz project similar to Streetlight Manifesto. He needs some horn players, and I need to set my soul free through my horn. I'm listening to CJ Boyd's bass and his music feels good. I cut my left-hand fingernails this morning in anticipation of playing guitar when I get home tonight. I'm working on some transition music to send to Michigan Public Radio. I have an interesting project that I'm helping out with at work. I get to make some sound-bites and intro/outro pieces for this project that is going to be an oral history of the city of Detroit.

The health care thing is really freaking me out. As an artist who is frequently sick in one way or another, I'm on tenderhooks about the public option, but the allotment of coverage is really really scaring me. Especially because while the rights and money for women's care (including abortions and birth control) are being disappeared, meanwhile this health care bill will totally cover Viagra! Aaaaugh.
Speaking of insane ladymedicine things, yesterday I received the single most disturbing piece of mail to ever cross my hands. What list am I on that I get this kind of thing?
Every winter, my internet service gets cranky in the cold, so I finally got my service back this morning after almost a week. To fill my need to stare at screens while I was internetless, I watched movies. I doodled my way through Harry Potter 6-- You can see my silly drawings here: Harry Potter Doodles
I have a neat interview up over on the Hideous Energy Comics Blog. We talk music, books, all kinds of stuff! |

I have already sent out a few holiday cards. I am going to the post office again tomorrow, so if you want SOME MAIL, you have until 4 p.m. EST, Friday, to send me your name & address by LJ PM or e-mail.
I have another overnight shift this weekend, so after Friday afternoon, I will basically be brain-dead until Monday, so that will be it for the mail. Even if you don't want anything from me other than A RARE AND FOREIGN FLORIDIAN POSTMARK, I will send you shit, I mean, geeze. Everybody likes snail mail. It reminds you of the stories of your grandfathers. Walking fifteen miles uphill in the snow and shit.
Anyway, they will probably be late for X-Mas regardless, so I donno, I will even mail shit on Monday WHO KNOWS.
Going to bed. Good night. |
